How you work

Your body, feelings and thoughts (including Shady and Sparky) all work together to make you you. Once you understand how these parts of you work you WILL be able to cope with problems, believe in yourself and follow your dreams! Let’s look at each one of these now …

Your body

Your body is the physical part of you. You see the colours of a rainbow, hear birds chirping, smell a beautiful rose, taste a juicy apple, touch a slimy slug and move from place to place by crawling, walking, running, hopping, jumping, swimming, climbing and more.

You can share the things that make you happy because your body can ‘do’ stuff like: climb, run, play, make potions, draw, look after animals, ride a bike and lots, lots more.

If you can’t do something as well as other people or you have a disability, illness or injury, then that’s okay!

You have the exact right body for you.

You are different from everyone else, just like a jigsaw puzzle piece is different from all the other pieces. Physically you are EXACTLY how you are supposed to be. Be grateful for what you do have and what does work, because when you stop to think about it, your body is a very precious gift! 

Look after your body

If you want your gift to last a long time and work really well for you, it helps to look after it. Here is a list of everything your body needs to be healthy and happy:

*     Fresh air to breath

*     Shelter and warmth

*     Clean water to drink (between 6 and 8 cups a day)

*     Healthy food to eat including fresh veggies, fruit, grains, fish, chicken, meat, nuts, seeds, beans, eggs, milk and yogurt (if all these suit your beliefs and your body)

*     Plenty of sleep (between 8 and 12 hours a night)

*     Play and exercise (at least 1 hour a day)

*     Cuddles

*     A bit of sun and

*   Somewhere to go to the toilet!

Body signals

Your body, feelings and Sparky all know when your body needs something. Your body tells you first – you feel hungry, thirsty, tired, sick, hurt or something else. As soon as you realise you feel any of these fix yourself up by eating, drinking, having a rest, getting help or having a cuddle. If you don’t listen to your body’s signals then your feelings tell you next – you feel cranky, annoyed or sad.

When you notice your cranky, annoyed or sad feelings get Sparky’s help to figure out exactly what your body needs. Sparky is your body’s best mechanic. He can work out what’s wrong and he will tell you what to do to fix it.

Next time you feel bad, check with Sparky to see if your body needs anything by asking, “Is my body okay?” Listen to the answer and give your body what it needs.

If you look after your body it runs as well as a racing car, ready to take on whatever adventure or challenge you are ready for.
